What is the Coastal style?
Coastal style is based on the elements and colours that can be found by the sea: sand, driftwood, rope, shells and light reflecting off the water. All of these create a relaxing atmosphere that is brought into the home in a clean and simple way. It’s like living by the sea but without the hassle of sand.
You may think that Coastal style is synonymous with anchors and seashells on the wall, but that’s actually the Nautical or Seafaring style. Coastal style is more minimalist and less attention-grabbing, although they do have some elements in common such as navy blue tones.
Characteristics of the Coastal style
1. Abundant natural light
The interior of your home should never feel dark or cramped – on the contrary, it should feel light, open and airy. To achieve this, use large windows, glass doors and skylights (if possible).
If you want to use curtains for your windows, make sure they are made of a thin material such as linen to let in light.
2. Natural elements in furniture and accessories
Coastal design uses many natural elements to create a relaxed and simple atmosphere. This is achieved through the furniture, which is often made of wicker, rattan, light woods (or blond maple or ash) and light, worn fabrics.
Linen, straw, seagrass or jute are also widely used, and textures are simple and dull. Forget metal and flashy surfaces, you can leave that to the Modern style.
3. Open and minimalist spaces
It is not surprising that a design aesthetic that focuses on light supports open spaces. Don’t clutter the room with pointless furniture or decorative elements, but try to create a sense of flow.
If you can knock down some walls, do so – this will help your room look larger and more spacious. In case you don’t want to do this, you can always follow a minimalist aesthetic to achieve a similar effect.
4. Coastal shades
White is the most characteristic colour of the coastal style, together with natural light it will make your space look much more airy. You can also combine it with the blue colours of the sea and the beige of the beach sand.
5. A bit of marine decoration
It’s nice to add a few marine touches to your home décor such as shells, glass bottles or woven baskets, but the important thing is not to go overboard. Keep your design simple and you won’t go wrong.
